OUR STORY • HUDDERSFIELD • SINCE 2014

Founded in Huddersfield in 2014, Tuition Time began with one teacher, four students and a belief that excellent education and care should be within reach of every family.
Today, that small beginning has grown into two community Hubs where learning, care and giving back come together

WHere it began
Before Tuition Time had a name, its founder, Tyiab Sethi, spent nearly a decade at Eastborough Junior Infant and Nursery School in Dewsbury, helping Year 6 pupils through one of the most important stages of primary school.
But the idea behind Tuition Time was also personal. Growing up in a single-parent home, Tyiab understood the pressure families could face: stretched budgets, difficult choices and the feeling that excellent support was sometimes reserved for those who could afford more.
That experience stayed with him. It shaped a simple belief: every family should be able to access excellent learning and care without feeling left behind.
“Single-parent families were never an afterthought. They were part of the reason Tuition Time began.”
2014 - Birkby, huddersfield
In 2014, Tuition Time opened in one small room in Birkby with just four students.
Tyiab was the teacher, administrator and everything in between. He continued working full-time in Dewsbury while building Tuition Time during evenings and weekends, supported by the people closest to him.
The promise was straightforward: provide outstanding tuition at a price that real families could afford.
Ofsted registration followed in early 2015. By the end of that year, the first tutor had joined and the small room was beginning to fill.
The first Tuition Time room opened in Birkby.
The small group that began the journey.
Excellent support within reach of local families.

our purpose
Tuition Time did not grow through outside investment or a finished blueprint. It grew gradually through teaching, listening to families and responding to what the community genuinely needed.
Keeping education and care accessible was never treated as an optional extra. From the beginning, the aim was to keep support within reach, offer families flexibility and help them understand the financial support available to them.
The journey began in the classroom, with direct experience of what children, parents and schools needed.
New services developed in response to the needs families brought through the door.
The organisation was designed to support families, strengthen its community and help good travel further.
“The aim was never simply to build a tuition centre.
It was to build something families could genuinely rely upon.”
our journey
Tuition Time did not grow by adding disconnected services.
Each new chapter developed from something families and the wider community genuinely needed.
Tuition Time opens in one small room in Birkby with four students.
Ofsted registration follows and the first tutor joins the growing team.
Tuition Time Languages launches after recognising that some children needed a more accessible approach to Arabic learning. Basic Urdu and the first adult classes followed.
When the doors closed during the pandemic, the Hub used its own resources to provide meals and practical support for children, families and frontline NHS workers.
Tuition Time Languages develops into ILM Academy, creating a specialist home for Qur’an reading, Islamic studies and Arabic learning. Adult learning later develops under Skills+.
Give A Little Back CIC is established as a separate Community Interest Company, with its own directors, programmes and funding.
Two Huddersfield Hubs now bring tuition, childcare, faith education, adult learning and giving back together.
2020 - the pandemic
During the 2020 lockdowns, students could no longer come through the Hub’s doors. But the responsibility to the community did not disappear.
Inspired by the national campaign to protect children who depended on free school meals, the Hub began providing meals and food packs for local families. Food was also provided for NHS workers serving on the front line.
There were no grants supporting this work at the beginning. The help came through the Hub’s own resources and its commitment to giving back. For a period, more was being given out than the organisation was bringing in, but the work continued.
The Hub worked alongside Halifax Opportunities Trust, Horton Housing and The Welcome Centre to reach families who needed support, and also supported pupils from William Henry Smith School.

“Our doors were closed to learners, but they were never closed to our community.”

Bringing learning, care and giving back together.
A growing team of more than 50 staff, tutors and volunteers helps make this work possible.

tHE PEOPLE BEHING THE JOURNEY
The journey began with one person teaching four students, but it could never have grown through one person alone.
Tyiab’s lived experience, classroom background and belief in accessible support gave Tuition Time its original direction.
The staff, tutors, volunteers, families and community partners who joined along the way helped turn that belief into something much bigger.
The vision remains founder-led, but its strength comes from the people who carry it forward every day.
“One person can begin a journey. It takes a community to make it travel.”
Founder & Managing Director
THE NEXT CHAPTER
The next chapter is about taking what has been learned in Huddersfield and carefully developing more self-sustaining community Hubs: places where excellent learning and care create employment, strengthen families and fund positive impact beyond their own walls.
Future plans include new early-years provision, practical community learning and opportunities to help committed local leaders explore how a Hub could work in their own community.
The goal is not expansion for its own sake.
It is to build carefully, protect the purpose and allow the ripple to travel further.
Each Hub should understand and respond to the community around it.
Strong services and responsible systems should create long-term stability.
Success should produce opportunities and impact beyond the organisation itself.
