Paying for Wraparound Care: Tax-Free Childcare vs Universal Credit
Before- and after-school care makes working life possible for families across the UK, but the cost adds up fast. The good news is that most working parents can get help from the government, through either Tax-Free Childcare or the childcare element of Universal Credit. You can only use one at a time, so choosing the right one matters. This guide explains both in plain English, with real examples using our own Legends Care prices
The two main schemes at a glance
Tax-Free Childcare | Universal Credit childcare | |
|---|---|---|
How much help | £2 for every £8 you pay (20%) | Up to 85% of your costs back |
Maximum | £500 per child every 3 months (£2,000 a year), or £1,000 every 3 months for a disabled child | £1,071.09 a month for one child, £1,836.16 for two or more |
Child's age | 11 or under (16 or under if disabled) | Until 31 August after their 16th birthday |
Who it suits | Working families not on Universal Credit | Working families on lower incomes who claim Universal Credit |
How it works | Pay into an online childcare account, and the top-up is added | Pay the provider, report the cost, and get it back in your payment |
Important: you cannot get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as Universal Credit or childcare vouchers. If you're unsure which is better for you, the government's childcare calculator will compare them in a few minutes.
Tax-Free Childcare explained
You open an online childcare account and pay money in. For every £8 you pay, the government adds £2. You then pay your childcare provider straight from the account.
Who can get it?
You (and your partner, if you have one) are working, or about to start work
Each of you expects to earn at least £2,643.68 every 3 months if aged 21 or over, about 16 hours a week at the National Living Wage
Neither of you expects an adjusted net income over £100,000 a year
You're not claiming Universal Credit or childcare vouchers
There are exceptions. For example, if your partner works and you get Carer's Allowance, or you've started a business in the last 12 months, you may still qualify.
Don't forget to reconfirm
You must sign in to your childcare account every 3 months to confirm you're still eligible. If you miss it, your top-up stops, and this catches lots of busy parents out. Set a phone reminder.
Universal Credit childcare explained
If you claim Universal Credit and you're working, you can claim back up to 85% of what you pay for registered childcare, up to the monthly limits. This includes breakfast clubs, after-school care and holiday clubs.
You must be working. If you live with a partner, you both need to be working, unless one of you can't because of a disability or health condition.
The childcare must be with a registered provider.
You usually pay first and then report the cost in your Universal Credit account to get it back. If paying upfront is hard, speak to your work coach, because help may be available.
What it could cost: real examples
Here's how the two schemes work with our own Legends Care monthly memberships. These are simple illustrations. Your actual Universal Credit payment also depends on your earnings and circumstances.
Membership | Full price | With Tax-Free Childcare, you pay | With Universal Credit, up to 85% back, you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
Essential: Mon–Fri, 3:00–5:30pm | £460 a month | £368 (government adds £92) | from £69 |
Prime: adds care until 6:30pm and homework support | £600 a month | £480 (government adds £120) | from £90 |
As a rule of thumb, families who already claim Universal Credit usually get far more help through it than through Tax-Free Childcare. Always check with the calculator before switching, and don't cancel a Universal Credit claim until you have a Tax-Free Childcare decision.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit together?
No. You have to choose one. Use the government's childcare calculator to see which gives you more.
Does Tax-Free Childcare work for after-school clubs?
Yes, as long as the provider is registered and signed up to Tax-Free Childcare. Tuition Time Hub, which runs Legends Care, is signed up. When you add us as a provider in your childcare account, you'll need to search for the registered provider name for your child's site, so just ask our team and we'll give you the exact details.
Can I use either scheme for holiday clubs?
Yes. Both schemes can be used for registered holiday clubs as well as term-time care.
What happens if I forget to reconfirm Tax-Free Childcare?
Your top-ups stop until you reconfirm, so set a reminder every 3 months.
